The day started bright and sunny though chilly, with myself, Mia, Ronnie, Alan and John M leaving LGC for Lemsford. Andy S joined us at Little Almshoe.
As there had been a lot of rain over recent days the roads were very mucky; indeed, we had to negotiate a number of floods, the worst being about a foot deep and thirty yards long, on Kimpton Road near Codicote. John failed to keep his feet out of the water unfortunately, and shortly after abandoned us to return home. Actually not far for him from that point!
At Ayot St. Peter we bumped into an East Herts group, though I failed to recognise anyone and shot past! (Sorry…).
The pub was warm and welcoming, though they managed to forget Mia’s order until prompted, so her meal arrived a good while after everyone else’s.
Still, it didn’t delay us too much, though by the time we were ready to leave at about one, Andy and Alan had already set off for a direct ride back.
This period proved to be the best part of the day, with bright sunshine making the Herts countryside look it’s best.
With the state of the roads, it was almost inevitable that someone would suffer a puncture, and that someone was me! Fortunately it was soon fixed, and on we went to Whitwell, where I left Ronnie and Mia to head north.
LGC to Lemsford and return was 35 miles, covered at an average of about 13 mph.
