This is an updated version of my signpost notes from the last issue (not published)
Hi to you all from the North Herts section. My name is Alan Brosnan and I have taken over from Stuart Collins as the Secretary of our section (I’m pleased that Stuart will continue riding with us and also help me with this job).
First a little about me – I am a very keen cyclist and have joined this section during the lockdown last year. I know some of the St Albans section riders who joined me two years ago on a cycling holiday to Kenya for the Red Rubber Ball Foundation.
In September this year I did the famous challenge Lands End to John O’Groats (LEJOG) in 10 days for the Letchworth Garden City Hospice – I see from your last Signpost edition this LEJOG is popular. I did this with 4 of my cycling friends (in a group of 22) and we agreed to “go easy” due to the 100 mile a day challenge. I’m afraid this lasted about 30 minutes into the first day and for the next 10 days we were racing up and down hills with several riders from our group of 22. This was probably one of the biggest challenges of my life, but I grew stronger as the days passed and am now riding faster than ever. We completed LEJOG with a company called Peak Tours who I can recommend.
The relatively small North Herts section has continued to ride during these trying times and now restrictions are more relaxed, we are gradually adding numbers to our Tuesday and Thursday rides. This has reduced during the winter but we seem to be a hardy section!!.
We continue to ride in smaller groups on other days of the week and weekends, meeting up for coffee and cakes. It’s really encouraging to see so many cyclists out on the road.
Last Summer our section had a lovely trip up to the coast – taking the train up to Kings Lynn then cycling through Sandringham to Hunstanton and return back to Kings Lynn (thanks Angie for leading this). Unfortunately it rained all day but my fingers are crossed for the next time.
Below are some photo’s of our rides during the last few months (happy memories):
In the coming year my goal is:
- to get more of our members out riding,
- Maybe attract more members,
- Have some special events eg. day trips to coast and even cycling holidays
- Try to have joint rides with our other sections.
Happy Riding to all
Alan B
